How To Transfer A Title On A Motor Vehicle In Florida In A Common Sale
If you want to sell your vehicle in Florida to another individual, you have some extra steps to take over similar sellers in other states. It’s still easy though. For starters, you will need to get a hard copy of the title. Commonly in Florida, people only have e-titles on their vehicles. If you’re selling to an individual, you can’t transfer the title using a Florida e-title for your motor vehicle. You’ll need to order a hard copy. You can just order the title for a $2.50 service fee via the state’s website at www.flhsmv.gov. You could also go to your local Tax Collector office. They might be able to get you the title right away for a $10 expedited service fee if you’re in a hurry.
Once you get the hard copy of the title, you’ll need to complete the transfer section on the back of the title. In Florida, you can’t sell a car to another individual if it has a lien on it. So, you might be asked to get a lien satisfaction document. In other words, they might want proof that you don’t still owe money on the vehicle if the existing title shows it had a lien holder. You might also want to get a bill of sale together and have it notarized with the buyer. (Here’s a link to a bill of sale option.)
Once you have sold the vehicle, you must submit the Notice of Sale to the state, because in 2009, Florida passes a law requiring all sellers to file a Notice of Sale. (Here’s a link to that document.) This also helps you avoid liability for the car after the sale, in the case of a purchaser failing to submit the title to the state.
If your car was never actually titled in Florida, you also have to fill out and submit a Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification. To have this verified, you’ll need the odometer to be checked by a Florida FLHSMV compliance officer, a licensed Florida motor vehicle dealer, a Florida notary public or a law enforcement officer.
