Did you know that there is a secret tunnel running beneath Vero Beach? Seriously! There is a tunnel that once connected Indian River Citrus Bank to the bank’s drive-thru on 20th Street (State Road 60). See, during the 1950s, drive-thru banks grew in popularity. So, the bank designed a super modern glass and aluminum drive-thru. You can check out a photo of the bank here on Google Books.
So, for the purpose of safety, the financial transactions were taken back and forth through a tunnel under State Road 60! It was built in 1958. It was only ever used by employees. There was a side entrance to the tunnel. It wound around diagonally to the corner of Old Dixie Highway where the current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service building is located.
Before you think about going on an adventure, you should know that the old tunnel is now filled in and it’s not possible for you to access it.
